Hauola - City of Refuge

This Heiau was a "City of Refuge, where one could be protected from breaking "kapu" (forbidden things - such as walking in the King's shadow - punishable by death).

This particular location is where the  Wailua River meets the sea - considered to be one of the most sacred places in all of Hawai'i.
